Natalie in ‘Elle’ (April 2008)

Natalie Portman tops Elle Magazine’s April 2008 “Intelligent Women Issue”. Here’s what she had to share:
On a party she went to in Hollywood the night before the interview. “They had a psychic, and he told me my whole life will change when I’m 34 and that I should stay away from water.”
On growing up in Jericho, Long Island: “[I was] different from the other kids: I was more ambitious. I knew what I liked and what I wanted, and I worked really hard to get it.”
On a few of her political stances: “A lot of the stuff people say about her, I hear it and my stomach falls because it’s so sexist. You ask people why they don’t like her and it’s because her husband cheated on her! That was obviously not her choice. She’s so much more polished and experienced than anyone else. Last night, a friend, a social worker in L.A. who works with underprivileged kids, was saying how these girls who have never been interested in politics before are so excited that a woman might be president. I mean, look how many women are in government…Hillary’s one of, what, [a handful of] female senators?… I also like Obama. I even like McCain. I disagree with his war stance—which is a really big deal—but I think he’s a very moral person. I met him and Hillary on the same day, actually, when I went to Washington with Finca [a nonprofit that gives loans to businesswomen in developing countries]. Hillary was by far the smartest person I met that day. Just totally focused, and knew more about the issues than anyone else, and was so able to go from one thing to the other.” Read the full interview here.

Natalie Portman in ‘NYT’ Style Magazine

Natalie Portman is absolutely stunning in NYT Style Magazine’s latest cover feature. Here are some interesting interview snippets:

You had a kind of precocious child-woman quality in that film that elicited a ‘‘Lolita’’-esque response. Was that unnerving?
Yes. One scene was uncomfortable: when I try to kiss Jean Reno. He was, obviously, much older. And around that time, there was the scene in ‘‘Interview With the Vampire’’ when Kirsten Dunst, who was around my age, kissed Brad Pitt. There were articles about young girls in adult roles, and my family ran away from anything that was ‘‘Lolita’’-esque. And then, of course, they offered me ‘‘Lolita’’ itself. That was the ultimate no.
Did it have anything to do with playing Anne Frank on Broadway?
For many Jews, especially those who have experienced the Holocaust, Israel represents a place of refuge and acceptance. Perhaps. I was 16 when I played Anne Frank. It was tough: I went to high school full time. I was studying for my A.P. tests and my SATs while I was performing eight times a week. The audience reaction, night after night, was really moving. During ‘‘Anne Frank,’’ I really began to understand what Gertrude Stein meant about the power of repetition. Hearing words over and over increases their meaning and their impact.

Natalie in TeenVogue!

Natalie’s the covergirl of this month’s ‘TeenVogue’. Here’s a little preview of the article featured in this issue:

Shooting Stars: How We Got That Picture
Get the inside scoop on Teen Vogue’s cover shoot with Natalie. Then flip through photos straight from the set.
WORKING UP A STORM: We headed to photographer Bruce Weber’s cabins in the beachside town of Montauk, New York—the perfect backdrop for a late–summer shoot. The only problem? Rain showers rolled into town with us. Luckily, they stopped midmorning, just long enough for us to snap the perfect shots—without getting Natalie completely drenched.
CLOTHES CALL: Known for her down–to–earth demeanor and effortless style, Natalie arrived dressed in jeans, a blue Marens Fish Market hoodie, and flip–flops. She doesn’t wear fur or leather, so we had several pairs of satin Té Casan shoes at hand. The brainy Harvard alum did a crossword puzzle while getting camera–ready and bonded with our terrier Reilly.
ACTION FIGURE: Natalie had just returned from an eye–opening trip to Africa, where she worked with FINCA International—an organization that provides loans to people in developing countries who are looking to start their own companies. “It’s sort of crazy that I have a Harvard education and no one ever mentioned world poverty to me,” she says.
ON TAKING THINGS FOR GRANTED: “You go to these places” she says, “and everything that you think about on a daily basis peels away. I know it’s clichéd to say, but it’s true. I was just in Uganda, where getting water for the day is such a battle. So i came back and started showering for, like, two seconds.”
ON MIXING UP FASHION: “I try to have fun with what I already have, to put things together in new ways, to be creative and inventive and artistic and self expressive in that, instead of getting new stuff all the time.”

Huge thanks to Samantha for letting me know about it!

Inside Entertainment article and cover

Natalie is on the cover of March’s edition of Entertainment Inside, and there’s an article on her as well. It’s comparing Natalie to Elizabeth Taylor and Audrey Hepburn.
Here’s the cover: Oscar edition.
I transcribed the article, which you can read in the full story. I know, there may be typos, but I did the best I could.
